We have long been convinced that Turmeric is a real superfood spice. Finally, it has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, strengthens the immune system and can improve digestion. And those who want to lose weight are also well-advised to add the Indian spice to their diet: Turmeric activates the flow of bile and thus promotes fat burning. Sounds too good to be true? A little…
Even if the spice’s positive effects speak for themselves, side effects can occur if consumed too much.
Side effects cannot be ruled out precisely because Turmeric can be used in such a versatile and complex manner. Turmeric lovers can take a deep breath – the list of adverse effects of Turmeric is not too long. Still, they are worth mentioning—especially when the body is already stressed, or you are consuming certain combinations.
Despite its digestive effects, Turmeric can harm our stomach: “High doses of turmeric can also cause gastrointestinal problems, gas, nausea, vomiting, stomach pains and diarrhoea,” reveals Dr Amita Kundra in Popsugar. “In some cases, excessive turmeric consumption can also cause anaemia and slow blood clotting.” However, if you consume less than 1000 mg of Turmeric per day, you do not need to worry about these side effects.
Suppose you enjoy the benefits of Turmeric in the form of a dietary supplement capsule and also take an aspirin. In that case, this combination can lead to increased bleeding: During your period, for example, if you are prone to nosebleeds or just cut yourself. The same can occur in combination with blood thinners.
If you have gallstones, take anti-inflammatory medication, have diabetes, are pregnant, or breastfeeding, you should avoid Turmeric (or consult your doctor about it).
